Most of you know I have a loud laugh [...]]]> I had a great time this weekend gathering with my family to visit and celebrate my mother. Aunt Clara was in town (see earlier blog). Between my aunt and my mother the house held roughly the same power as a meeting of two heads of state. Most of you know I have a loud laugh well my cousin, Carmen, has the most infectious laugh ever – in fact my friend Carol Mendel, said she could hear us laughing from the driveway. As I thought of all the funny, practical and inspirational advice my mother has bestowed on me – I thought I should share …….

My all-time favorite is ” Roy, the harder you work the luckier you get “. Here are the some of the best of the rest.

1. Never walk behind a horse without letting the horse know you’re there.
2. Never transplant anything if there is an ‘r’ in the month.
3. Never stop dreaming.
4. Don’t let anyone tell you no – if you work hard enough you can achieve anything.
5. Never put your eggs on one basket.
6. Be wary of anyone living in a border town. They could be running from the law.
7. Pennies make dollars.
8. Only trash makes butter in a jar – churns are cheap.
9. There is no shame in being poor but there is shame in being dirty.
10. You can tell more about a person by looking at their shoes than anything else.

1. The crowd ate 172 hot dogs (in 2 hours 15 minutes)

2. The RDES staff ate 18.

3. I ate 3

4. Those pink industrial hot dogs are called Bozo dogs.

5. Most people like their hot dogs a bit charred.

6. Marilyn Porter and I share the same childhood hot dog eating pattern. The pattern will remain secret to us!

7. I can pull Justin over 400 feet in a Menonite buggy.

8. I still love to play with dogs

9. Roxie, Abby and Max are the best sale dogs ever. They also enjoyed the treats!

10. Everyone enjoyed our little journey west. Stay turned for other adventures.

My mother is number six out of seven daughters so ask anyone who knows me or has ever watched ‘Name that Tune’ I can top any southern story in three words – almost always involving the word aunt. Enter Aunt Clara – the queen. She has truly worked harder and achieved more true success than anyone I know. She is a perfect aunt – her lap was always available – she was the best comforter – the best dream listener – make you think – make you feel like the most loved and adored person. This weekend she held steady with all the above (I’m sure we’re both glad we didn’t try the lap thing) there at 84 to support her favorite sister and nephew close the Fayetteville house. What a lucky man i am to have grown up with a whole tribe of superhero southern Amazon herorines blazing trails and teaching me right from wrong. She is GREAT. She has set a standard to follow. She is the only person to ever call me ‘baby’ and she still does. Thanks for the support this weekend and I love and RESPECT you. Incidentally Aunt Clara only has a passing interest in Antiques – how did that happen?
